The front range can’t shake its ozone problem. scientists are taking to the skies to figure out why
Researchers from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recently used the rackmount version of 2B Tech’s Model 205 Dual Beam Ozone Monitor as part of their study to investigate Colorado’s ground-level ozone problem.

Case Studies
Products: Model 106-M
Category: Industrial Ozone Monitor
Application: Industry
This research investigated how the wavelengths of light emitted by mercury lamps affects radical generation and chemistry in an oxidation flow reactor. Different types of lamps were designed and tested, and the Model 106-M Ozone Monitor measured the ozone concentration at the exit of the flow reactor. Empirical estimation equations could be used to predict the hydroxyl radical production, a much simpler approach than using photochemical models.
Products: Model 106-L
Category: Ambient Ozone Monitor, Industrial Ozone Monitor
Application: Industry, Ambient Air
In this study, a new method of cleaning the cabins of passenger airplanes was studied. High ozone was pumped into the aircraft’s air conditioning system. The 0-100 ppm range of the Model 106-L enabled researchers to monitor the fumigation levels of the ozone as well as the fallback to safe levels. Hospital-grade sterilization was achieved in about 90 minutes of treatment, with the added benefit of the ability of ozone to penetrate the hard-to-reach places on the plane, such as tray tables in the locked & upright position.
Products: Model 106-H
Category: Industrial Ozone Monitor
Application: Industry, Research
Researchers at the University of SĆ£o Paulo are studying the use of ozone as a more environmentally sound method for modifying the properties of starch. Industrial sectors that use starch include food, petrochemical, adhesives, paints, and others. This study applied high ozone and used the Model 106-H Ozone Monitor to follow the inlet and outlet concentrations of a reactor containing the starch. The study identified several techniques for optimizing starch properties.
Products: Black Carbon Photometer, Model 405 nm, POM
Category: Ambient Ozone Monitor, Other Monitor
Application: Communities, Research
Our instruments went out for a spin when researchers at the University of Texas loaded up the back of a hatchback for a study of the physiological effects of air pollution. The study was published in 2022 in the journal Sensors. Included were three instruments from 2B Tech to measure O3, NO2, NO, and black carbon. A tantalizing finding from the study: the biometric measurements themselves were in some cases good ādetectorsā of particulate matter (PM) pollution.
Products: 106-MH
Category: Industrial Ozone Monitor
Application: Industry
Ozone is often used to fumigate fruit and vegetables, to reduce occurrence of pathogens that can cause food-borne illnesses. This study used the Model 106-MH to monitor ozone administered to grape tomatoes to inactivate Salmonella, yeasts, and molds. Although the treatments reduced Salmonella and native microbiota populations, there were tradeoffs in various quality measures and nutrient content of the tomatoes.
Products: AQLite, AQSync, Model 106-L, PAM
Category: Ambient Ozone Monitor, Multi-Pollutant System
Application: Ambient Air, Government, Research
This study used 2B Tech instruments to evaluate the performance of CO2 sensors. The multiple measurements offered by our Personal Air Monitor, AQLite, and AQSync open the door for verifying the performance of lower-cost sensor technology.
Products: Model 108-L
Category: Industrial Ozone Monitor
Application: Industry
The Model 108-L has been integrated into the STERISAFE PRO system, which uses fumigations with high amounts of gas-phase ozone to disinfect surfaces and destroy viruses and bacteria. The integrated relay and the wide measurement range of the Model 108-L (0-100 ppm) make it possible for one instrument to serve two purposes critical to the disinfection process: monitoring the high ozone concentrations needed to ensure disinfection, and also monitoring low ozone concentrations to determine when safe levels are re-established at the end of fumigation.
Products: Model 202
Category: Ambient Ozone Monitor
Application: Ambient Air, Communities
The Northern Chesapeake Bay experiences higher ozone than the rest of Maryland, and in fact accounts for most of the ozone exceedances in the entire state. In this 2016/2017 study, the Model 202 was deployed on on Hart Miller Island about 22 km east of downtown Baltimore and 5 km offshore. Maryland Department of the Environment compared the 202’s FEM ozone measurements with FEM/FRM ozone analyzers at other sites in Maryland.
Products: Model 202
Category: Ambient Ozone Monitor
Application: Ambient Air, Communities
The Middle East is a hot spot for air pollution, owing to urbanization, industrialization, high emissions from petrochemical industries, and the intense solar radiation and high temperatures of the region. The Model 202 was used aboard a research vessel that sailed around the Arabian Peninsula gathering data. The 202’s DewLine Nafion tube and Teflon filter helped to minimize potential interferences from water vapor and particles.
Products: Model 205
Category: Ambient Ozone Monitor
Application: Ambient Air, Government, Communities
The Model 205 Ozone Monitor took a ride on Salt Lake City’s public transit light-rail train cars in the city’s efforts to map pollution in the Great Salt Lake Ozone Study. High NOx emissions near roadways led to the counterintuitive results of this study.
